Audio Mastering Rates

  • $85 for singles

  • $65 per song for 2 to 4 songs

  • $55 per song for 5 or more songs

I’ll do everything I can to make your songs sound as good as possible. Revisions are included if you’d like me to try something different after hearing initial masters. Attended sessions are available at no extra charge. Online virtual attended sessions are also available.

I’d be happy to talk on the phone in advance of mastering to discuss your goals and to get on the same page. I can evaluate your mixes and provide feedback if you’d like.

I will deliver initial masters as 16bit, 44.1k WAV files. 24bit, 48k, 96k, FLAC, MP3, Apple Digital (MFiT), etc. are available upon request at no additional charge. If you’re unsure which formats you might need, tell where you’re sending the masters and I’ll provide the appropriate formats.

Interludes are not billed as full songs. If your songs are unusually short or sparse I will likely charge you less. If your songs are extra long I may quote a higher price. 12 or more songs at once may warrant a bulk discount. If you are a returning client and you’d prefer to pay my 2023 rates just let me know. I want to work with you - if you have a limited budget, don’t hesitate to ask for a custom quote.

Optional extras:

  • $10 additional per song for tape layback mastering with my Studer A80 VU MK1 1/2” tape machine at 15 or 30ips. It’s a beautiful sounding machine.

  • $15 per song for instrumentals, radio edits or alternate versions of a master where I can use the same settings as the main master.

  • $15 per song for vinyl optimized files. This begins with spectral high frequency inspection and reduction of treble hot spots if found. EE, LP & HP filtering will be applied if needed. Delivered as one file per side, hi-resolution with headroom, plus a cue sheet. This is available as a standalone service.

  • $30 for a second master of one song, processed with a different concept. This can be helpful if you’d like to try a clean version and a saturated version. Or, a tape layback master in addition to a regular master. We can do the first song of an album like this and let the results guide the rest of the songs.

  • $30 for a DDP file set, recommended as a CD production master.

  • $20 for a cassette-ready version, delivered as Side A and Side B files.

  • $40 additional per song for Dolby Atmos encoded versions. Files will be delivered as ADM BWF for distribution to Apple Music, as well as a reference MP4 for checking the sound on Apple spatial-equipped hardware (iPhone, iPad, Airpods, etc.)

  • $0 to $50 per song for de-noising, de-clicking, restoration, etc. I’ll quote the price after I hear the recording. One simple round of de-noising is included with mastering if it’s appropriate for the song.

In the sometimes murky world of mastering Gus at Sky Onion really stands out as someone consistently and affordably delivering polished, professional, and effective work - my go-to engineer and my favorite dash of secret sauce for over a decade! Super skilled, very responsive to notes and tweaks, and plus a total sweetheart. As I've said to him over email many times - IT SOUNDS VERY GOOD!
