About Sky Onion Mastering
Sky Onion mastering studio is located in the Sellwood/Westmoreland neighborhood of SE Portland.
I offer top-notch mastering for CD, vinyl and digital
at affordable rates for independant musicians and record lables. If you're in the
Portland area come tour my studio, listen to your mixes on my speakers and talk about
your project. Whether you're in the area or not I encourage you to have me master a
song for free as a demo of my work. Send an email or call to discuss the details:

My approach to mastering depends on the source material and the needs of the artist.
Sometimes the goal is to enhance and color
a mix to make an otherwise "flat" sounding recording come alive on the
speakers. Other times it's about maintaining the sonic qualities of a mix while
making minor adjustments in the most transparent way possible. I try my hardest
to acheive whatever sound the artist is after while subjecting every recording
to the highest possible level of quality control.
The most important mastering tool is a great the listening environment and I have a purpose-built acoustically treated
room featuring extremely accurate speakers, amplifiers and D/A converters. The
next most important thing is experience - I have mastered hundreds of records
in recent years (check my client list page for details). After
that, it's all about signal processing and I choose both analog and digital options.
Analog provides a level of warmth and pleasing harmonic distortion that is simply
not available in the digital domain. Digital, on the other hand, offers precision
and transparency that is unmatched in the analog realm. I use extremely high quality
analog and digital equipment from Cranesong, Manley, ADAM, Universal
Audio, Lavry, Revox, Hamptone, Summit, Langevin, UREI, PSP, Izotope & Voxengo.
Vinyl Mastering, Stem Mastering & ISRC
If you are planning on releasing your album on vinyl I can prepare your
songs for lacquer cutting. I know what to do to make your music sound great on vinyl
and make it easy for the lacquer cutting engineer.
In addition to my standard mastering service I also offer stem mastering. This is a great
way to get some analog character printed on the individual elements of your mix. Contact
me for details and price quotes which vary depending on the project.
If you would like me to embed ISRC codes on your CD master I can do that for no
additional charge. You must generate your own codes. Become an ISRC registrant at:

About Gus Elg
Since 2002 I've been busy at Sky Onion helping a wide variety of musicians
make records. I've been involved in rock, electronic, folk, jazz, orchestral
and hip-hop projects, and I enjoy listeng to and working with many styles of
music. When I'm not mastering records I can be found repairing audio equipment,
riding my bike, attempting to shoot the basketball and playing music of my own.
